Between & Beyond. Zwischenräume und Übergänge. Kunst und Raum seit 1960
In the organizer's words:
Space determines our position, movement, and perception. As viewers, we never experience art in isolation from space, but always within it. Under thetitle *Between & Beyond*, the Collection of Modern Art at the Pinakothek der Modernepresentsworks from its own collection that explore the aesthetic and social perception of space. On display are paintings, objects, and installation works from the 1960s to the present that explore the relationship between the artwork, space, and the viewer.
Beginning in the 1960s, Minimal Art artists began to conceive of the surrounding space as an integral part of their works. Space is viewed as an “interstitial” space (“between”) that arises between the artwork and the viewer, or as an imaginary and transcendent space (“beyond”) that can be experienced through light, shadow, and movement.
Pioneers such asDan Flavin, Fred Sandback, and the hitherto little-noticedMary Missused new materials and, through their works, created spaces that explicitly incorporated the viewers’ experiences. The exhibition space became part of the artwork. In painting, too, pictorial space was increasingly called into question:Lucio Fontanacut into the canvas, whileIda Applebroogassembled her compositions from several individual canvases featuring complementary motifs. These perspectives on an expanded pictorial space also influenced subsequent generations. Monika Baerchallenges visual habits by interspersing her abstract paintings with subtle marks.Victor LeguyandRoman Ondakexpand the pictorial space to include a social dimension by sharing authorship with non-artists.
The works on view from the Modern Art Collection engage visitors and offer a new way of experiencing the museum space. States of limbo, moments of transition, and thresholds invite a different kind of engagement—with what is otherwise repressed or overlooked.
On view are works by, among others, Nevin Aladağ, Carl Andre, Ida Applebroog, Monika Baer, Dirk Bell, Joseph Beuys, Martin Boyce, Alberto Burri, Dan Flavin, Lucio Fontana, Wade Guyton, Klára Hosnedlová, Donald Judd, Imi Knoebel, Victor Leguy, Mary Miss, Roman Ondak, Fred Sandback, Sean Scully, Augustas Serapinas, and Richard Serra.
Curated by Verena Hein and Bernhart Schwenk, with Eva Schuster.
