The Ars Discendi team combines insights into secular and religious literature around 1500 with the profession of book printing, which was still quite new at the time. In fact, Lübeck was a major center of book printing starting in the last third of the 15th century. Not only do we get to know Birgitta Birgersdotter, who played a decisive role in shaping the spiritual and secular fortunes of Sweden and beyond in the 14th century, but we also learn what Middle Low German sounds like and that, as a North German, you can actually understand quite a bit of it. Who actually read back then, and what was on the bestseller lists? How were books produced back then, and by whom?
