September 4, 6:00 p.m.: Reading “Reading Flowers—2,000 Years of Literature Between Beauty and Transience”

The Bible, Baudelaire, Brecht—and flowers made from Bobby Car parts. To kick off the first Hamburg Art Week, the Stern-Wywiol Gallery is hosting an unusual evening: mother and son—Sylvia and Anton Wempner, experienced reciters and connoisseurs of literature—will read their way through 2,000 years of floral poetry amidst floral artworks. The exhibition offers a fresh take on a subject thought to have been exhausted: sculptures made of fabric, bouquets made of trash, objects crafted from clay, wood, and books, alongside classical paintings. Grandma’s still lifes send their regards, yet remain far removed. The reading explores a motif that has blossomed, withered, and blossomed anew in literature and the visual arts for millennia—a symbol of beauty and transience.

Art Week Friday, September 4, 6 p.m.: Reading “Reading Flowers—2,000 Years of Literature Between Beauty and Transience.” For those who want to kick off Art Week on the Outer Alster in a relaxed way before the Currents take over the city. Free admission.
