Private detective Hardy Engel would do anything for his friends. When one of them dies, he bites into a murder case that soon becomes legendary.
When Hardy Engel immigrated to America in 1920, he received crucial help from his fellow countryman Paul Levy, whom he subsequently lost sight of. Engel, now a private detective, met him again in 1932. Under the name Paul Bern, Levy had become a powerful film producer for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer - and the husband of Hollywood superstar Jean Harlow. In the midst of the global economic crisis, the reunion seems to be a stroke of luck for the unemployed detective, who receives a lucrative assignment from Paul. And also for his friend, the bar owner Buck, who has massive debts to the mafia. But then Paul is murdered in his villa and Hardy is drawn into a case that challenges him like no other before and calls old friendships into question...
