The Boston Philharmonic Youth Orchestra is one of the best youth orchestras in North America. The orchestra is celebrated worldwide for its performances in major concert halls such as the Vienna Musikverein, the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, the KKL Lucerne, the Konzerthaus Berlin, the Berlin Philharmonie and Carnegie Hall in New York. On its European tour in 2024, the orchestra will now make its debut at the Elbphilharmonie together with its founder Maestro Benjamin Zander and the up-and-coming cellist Zlatomir Fung.

The 24-year-old Zlatomir Fung has won numerous international competitions. For example, he is currently the youngest cellist ever to win first prize at the renowned International Tchaikovsky Competition. He has already performed as a soloist with the Cleveland Orchestra, New York Philharmonic, London Philharmonic Orchestra, Orchestre National de Lille and BBC Philharmonic, among others.

Maestro Benjamin Zander was born in 1939 in Gerrards Cross, Buckinghamshire, the son of Jewish emigrants, and received cello and composition lessons as a child. At the age of 12, he began to study composition with Benjamin Britten and Imogen Holst, the daughter of Gustav Holst. A few years later, he was taught for several years by the famous Spanish cellist Gaspar Cassadó in Florence and Cologne and later completed his studies at the University of London.

The 84-year-old maestro Benjamin Zander conducts renowned orchestras such as the Philharmonia Orchestra, Israel Philharmonic Orchestra and Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra. The founding of the Boston Philharmonic Orchestra in 1978 and the founding of the Boston Philharmonic Youth Orchestra in 2012 were two of his countless outstanding biographical moments. Benjamin Zander is known for his unique and impressive interpretations. The New York Times named his recording of Stravinsky's "Le sacre du printemps" with the Boston Philharmonic Orchestra as one of the 10 most significant musical events of 1992. Benjamin Zander is also in great demand internationally as a speaker and has appeared several times at the World Economic Forum in Davos. His appearance at the TED Talks has been streamed over 21 million times. His masterclasses have influenced generations, have been published on YouTube by the Boston Philharmonic Orchestra since 2015 and are often streamed several hundred thousand times.
