With his Symphony No. 31, Mozart wanted to make an impression in the French metropolis and not only used proverbial timpani and trumpets, but also clarinets, flutes, oboes, bassoons and horns. This magnificent "Paris" is an appropriate counterpart to Schubert's "Great C major" which follows. At the time, the 60-minute symphony was considered too demanding and disappeared into the archives. It was only Schumann who dug it up again and initiated its premiere. It almost breaks your heart to know that Schubert himself never heard the notes of his wonderful Eighth. You, dear audience, will now have this good fortune.
