(Our Hospitality - USA 1923, Director: Buster Keaton and John Blystone, with Buster Keaton, Joe Roberts, Natalie Talmadge, Ralph Bushman, Joe Keaton, FSK 6, 74 min.
Synopsis:
The bachelor Willie McKay takes the train from New York to his hometown, where an inheritance awaits him. On the journey he meets the attractive Virginia Canfield, who invites him home when the inheritance turns out to be a flop. Willie is initially welcomed into the Canfields' home. But then everyone realizes that the McKay and Canfield families have been embroiled in a bloody feud for generations, which is now flaring up again. As long as Willie stays in the house, the law of hospitality protects him from the revenge of his hosts. But as soon as Willie steps outside the door, the three Canfield men seek his life.
Stefan Geiger, musical director of the LJO Bremen:
Just as the movie takes on the "Romeo and Juliet" theme in a wonderfully humorous way and turns it into a sparkling comedy, Carl Davis adds a brilliant score to the story. Their music takes us to the Wild West and makes us feel pathos, only to come up with musical slapstick a moment later that tickles the ears and the diaphragm. With this work, Carl Davis proves that he is rightly regarded as one of the most important composers for silent films.
Stefan Geiger has conducted the Bremen State Youth Orchestra since 1997. In the same year, the collaboration with Kommunalkino Bremen e.V. began. Since then, 15 silent films have been accompanied by the best young musicians from Bremen and the surrounding area in more than 30 screenings.
