Screening in the original English version with German subtitles.
The Italian master director Luca Guadagnino serves a wide range of different genres with artistic virtuosity. To mark Guadagnino's latest film CHALLENGERS -RIVALEN as part of our 'Cinéma Nostalgica' film series, we are presenting a best-of of his multifaceted oeuvre.
With his new film CALL ME BY YOUR NAME, Luca Guadagnino brings a sensual, transcendental story about first love to the big screen, based on André Aciman's acclaimed novel. The precocious 17-year-old Elio Perlman (Timothée Chalamet) enjoys the northern Italian summer of 1983 at the family villa built in the 17th century. The Italian-American boy spends his time playing and transcribing classical music, reading and flirting with his girlfriend Marzia (Esther Garrel). Elio has close ties with his parents. His father (Michael Stuhlbarg), a respected professor, specializes in Greco-Roman culture. Elio's mother Annella (Amira Casar) works as a translator. Together they teach their son about the achievements of high culture and provide him with a carefree life with all its advantages. Thanks to his worldly wisdom and intellectual talents, the boy already looks like an adult to the outside world, but contrary to appearances, Elio is still very inexperienced in many respects - especially in matters of the heart. One day, the charming American doctoral student Oliver (Armie Hammer) arrives at the villa as Elio's father's new summer intern. Amidst that sumptuous, sun-soaked setting, Elio and Oliver discover the intoxicating beauty of blossoming desire over the course of a summer that will change their lives forever.
