The series of works titled CHANGE IS WHAT I NEED portrays extraordinary women whose work and influence have brought about change toward social justice. These women embody extraordinary determination by following their inner compass and defying social norms, often subconsciously. They overcome obstacles and barriers, driven by their belief in their idea and their destiny, thus paving the way for a more just world.

Take Josephine Baker, for example, who began her career as a showgirl in Paris but soon used her fame to advocate for human rights and the fight against Nazi Germany. During World War II, she was a member of the Resistance and the Free French Forces. With her rainbow family, consisting of 12 adopted children of different backgrounds and religions, she showed that people of different ethnicities and religions can live together in peace.

As one of the first people to undergo gender reassignment surgery, Christine Jørgensen's journey challenged societal norms and prejudices. Christine underwent her first hormone treatments as early as the 1950s, which led to international attention and discussions about gender identity. Her trust in her inner voice and personal story have left an indelible mark on the LGBTQ+ community, paving the way for greater understanding and acceptance. Christine's courageous pioneering work inspires and shapes the ongoing fight for transgender rights.

Through her psychedelic environments, paintings, and objects, Yayoi Kusama brings an important voice to the discussion of mental health and encourages others to speak openly about their own experiences. Her art, which incorporates her experiences with hallucinations and anxiety, has made her not only a globally recognized artist, but also a source of hope. Kusama uses the repetitive and hypnotic power of dots to invite the viewer on a journey to infinity, reminding us that our differences and conflicts pale in comparison to the dimensions of the universe that surrounds us.

NELE PYE has portrayed these and other inspiring women in acrylic on canvas and is showing the series of works CHANGE IS WHAT I NEED as a solo exhibition in Munich in October. The vernissage with live band will take place on October 7, 2023 from 7 pm in the exhibition space Farbenladen. Feel free to come by!

The exploration of humanity and scientific, human achievement is integral to the work of NELE PYE. The process of creation combines the use of AI and digital sketching, which is then translated into the final work in acrylic on canvas in the studio. NELE PYE has studied in Leipzig and London.
