Chelsea Wolfe, the secret queen of goth but whose music goes far beyond it, has produced a new album. She Reaches Out To She Reaches Out To She, which will be released in early February, is a rebirth in real time and deals with how the past, present and future are connected. And of course Wolfe is once again breaking new ground. The heavy doom guitars still crash into the tracks, but even the vocals sound completely new and have an intimate, ASMR-like quality, being shaped very delicately and in great detail. Nothing seems straightforward, left to chance or as expected. Wolfe has worked long and hard with mixer Shawn Everett to extract the fine details from the vocals, incorporating them into the lush soundscape of the production - for which TV On The Radio co-founder Dave Sitek was responsible - and giving it a sense of urgency and excitement without overloading the delicate sections. Consequently, the almost sculptural vocals are also key to the meaning. However, this leap into the unknown should come as no surprise: Wolfe has never shied away from experimenting, transcending genres or inventing her own hybrids, even if the basic features of her sound can already be recognized on her debut The Grime And The Glow. This ambient atmosphere, the punk drums, the dark melodies and Wolfe's commanding voice have been the defining sound elements ever since, which are adapted to the content of the songs like an exoskeleton to a body. This is particularly true of She Reaches Out To She Reaches Out To She. At its core, the record is about recognizing how to find a way into the future from the past, what to cut out and leave behind, and what should continue to accompany you. Chelsea Wolfe asks these existential questions and answers them with a musical force that almost knocks the listener off their feet. This exceptional musician is coming to us on tour in June.
