In the organizer's words:

Christiane Pieper - Painting

"What are the essential elements of painting and how are they used in contemporary art? In the exhibition, the artist Christiane Pieper moves largely within the monochrome. Her work is characterized by a conceptual or self-reflexive approach in which the question of the basic elements is addressed in the works themselves. Pieper understands painting as an elementary process that cannot be expressed by anything other than painting itself. Her compositions focus on the relationship between color, space and material composition. In this way, their interplay opens up the pictorial space to the viewer. Pieper works partly in old masterly techniques and mixes her colors from a variety of pigments and beeswax. This creates the strong luminosity that is typical of her work.

She finds her inspiration in the intensive examination of art-historical themes of Impressionism, color field painting and the observation of nature. "... the more and more intensively I dealt with expression and composition in the course of painting, the more I became interested in the manifestations of color in nature, with its spatial structure occupying a central position."

The areas of color are not always sharply separated from one another, even if they sometimes clash powerfully. The pictures require the viewer to examine what color actually is and what color does in art, how color is represented in art. Her approach to monochrome surfaces, for example, shows how elementary the preoccupation with color can be understood, and at the same time also shows how they behave in the process with neighboring aids such as wax and clay.

For the special structures and effects, she uses only lightfast color pigments and high-quality oil and acrylic paints. Color and structures unite to create a harmony that combines an almost meditative depth through a multitude of thin layers of paint."
