Ciné-Club "L'une chante, l'autre pas" by Agnès Varda
Agnès Varda | 1977 | in French with English subtitles | 122 min
A groundbreaking film of an entire era, directed by Agnès Varda - a key figure of the Nouvelle Vague whose work is deeply influenced by her commitment to women's rights.
Based on the intersecting lives of Suzanne and Pomme, "L'une chante, l'autre pas" (One sings, the other doesn't) traces fourteen years of significant feminist struggles in the 1960s and 70s. At a time when the fragility of our achievements is becoming ever more apparent, this film emphatically underlines the need for collective solidarity.
" Paris, 1962: Two young women are at different turning points in their lives. The 17-year-old student Pauline dreams of breaking out of her bourgeois parental home and becoming a singer. By contrast, 22-year-old Suzanne is looking after her two children alone and has to come to terms with the traumatic suicide of her father. Life initially takes them in different directions as they each fight their own battles as women. After a difficult marriage in Iran, Pauline joins a traveling, politically committed music group. Suzanne, on the other hand, has freed herself from poverty and now works at a family planning advice center. Ten years later, a feminist demonstration finally brings the two women back together."
