CHOREIA developed out of a preoccupation with choral forms and the search for the space that has been lost to the choir and the community. CHOREIA takes up the challenge of the historically determined spatial separation of stage and audience space. In order to overcome this, choral forms are examined and new forms for space, sound and body are developed to bridge the physical distance. How can the institution of theater become a living form of community? From a critical-historical perspective, community should not be thought of in terms of unity, but in terms of the differences between singular individuals. CHOREIA utilizes the polyphonic power of unanimity and polyphony.

The Greek word choreia stands for the equal singing, speaking and dancing of people in a choir. With a large ensemble and live DJ as well as sung elements, CHOREIA gives the dance a voice. This is because the voice plays an important role in CHOREIA when it comes to the disembodied expansion of bodies in space and relationships between groups and individuals.
For CocoonDance's research into the concept of the still "unthought" body, which has been ongoing since 2016, the exploration of the voice in its "physicality" is a promising extension. It contributes to imagining new and different embodiments and relating them to other bodies.

The collective project CocoonDance was founded in 2000 by the choreographer Rafaële Giovanola and the dramaturge Rainald Endraß. After studying with Marika Besobrasova in Monte Carlo, the Baltimore-born Swiss choreographer was initially a soloist in Turin before being engaged by William Forsythe for eight years at the Ballett Frankfurt and then for fifteen years at the Choreographisches Theater Freiburg and Bonn. Since 2004, the company has been performing in the dance section of Bonn's Theater im Ballsaal, a house of producing artists and an interface and sphere of activity for various fields of contemporary dance. This also includes numerous art education projects, such as the award-winning Junior Company Bonn. Improvisation and ensemble work are the driving force behind artistic development. Collective decision-making processes and enormously continuous teamwork are the basis for the aesthetic density of the works.
