CONTEMPORARY CRAFT Margit Jäschke – Kairos

In the organizer's words:

Around 30 years of work by award-winning artist Margit Jäschke (* 1962) can be seen in the second exhibition of the "Contemporary Craft" series initiated in 2022 at the MK&G. Margit Jäschke describes herself as a wanderer between the worlds of art: Beyond the boundaries of jewelry, installation, painting and sculpture, she has created a completely independent body of work. She makes no distinction between wearable jewelry and autonomous works of art: graphic elements can be found in her jewelry pieces and, conversely, jewelry becomes a component of her paintings and collages.

In the largest solo exhibition to date, with over 230 works, Jäschke plays with proportions and dimensions in a deliberate and dynamic way. Flat brooches, for example, gain spatiality through their pedestals, while smaller brooches look like wearable paintings. The exhibition design created by Jäschke picks up on the interplay of flat and voluminous, fragile and robust elements, making her pieces appear complex and poetic at the same time. The subtitle of the exhibition is "Kairos", which is emblematic of Jäschke's oeuvre: Kairos is the Greek god of the happy moment that must be seized. If you ask Jäschke about the "common thread" in her work, she does not primarily think of ideas, concepts, materials or processes, but of the term "favorable moment".

The new exhibition series "Contemporary Craft", which is presented annually to accompany the MK&G messe, presents the work of important international artists and craftspeople and aims to raise the status of arts and crafts in contemporary discourse and to overcome the traditional boundaries between art and crafts.

"Margit Jäschke - Kairos" at the MK&G is the last stop of the exhibition, which has already been shown at the Grassi Museum of Applied Arts Leipzig and the Schmuckmuseum Pforzheim in 2022 and at Galerie Biró in Munich in 2023.

The exhibition is supported by the Hans Brökel Foundation for Science and Culture.
