Cornelius Völker

In the organizer's words:

Whether dog or heroin, human or guinea pig, cloud or weapon - as diverse as the motifs in Cornelius Völker's (*1965) work are: the artist's spirited and color-intensive painting style, in which he often turns to familiar and everyday things but makes them appear in a new light, has always been characteristic of his work. Even objects that are generally considered hardly worthy of painting find their way into Völker's work time and again. In this first institutional survey of his work in his hometown of Düsseldorf, the Kunstpalast is showing 85 oil paintings and 50 works on paper from all phases of the artist's career.
During his last years of training at the Düsseldorf Art Academy, Cornelius Völker developed his powerful figurative painting, in which realism and an expressive, impasto application of paint form an independent pictorial language. Surprising facets of what is depicted are revealed in a manner that is as virtuosic as it is humorous. A fundamental theme with which the painter continuously deals is time. Nine chapters in the show lead through Völker's oeuvre. The introductory room addresses the question of the topicality of the medium of oil painting in the 21st century. Cornelius Völker's paintings, glowing in vibrant colors, are examples of how works of art can heighten our perceptual abilities and thus trigger a sense of intensified presence.
Cornelius Völker trained with A.R. Penck and Dieter Krieg at the Düsseldorf Art Academy from 1989 to 1995. Since 2005 he has held a professorship for painting at the Münster Art Academy. He lives and works in Düsseldorf.
The exhibition is a cooperation between the Kunstpalast Düsseldorf and the Museum MORE in Gorssel.
