Within 24 hours, the lives of two couples are completely turned upside down: Guglielmo and Ferrando make a bet with the cynical Don Alfonso regarding the fidelity of their lovers, Fiordiligi and Dorabella. Don Alfonso is certain that, with the help of the maid Despina, he can prove the two sisters’ infidelity.

The two men disguise themselves as strangers in order to seduce each other’s lovers. In this game, feigned and genuine feelings become intertwined. In the end, the “false” couples celebrate a staged double wedding before the two sisters learn the true identities of their newlywed husbands. Although the six characters seem to reach a happy and conciliatory conclusion, the laughter sticks in everyone’s throat. Will the lovers return to their original relationships? Which feelings were—and are—actually genuine?
