On Saturday, June 15, 2024, Christopher Street Day will take place in Oldenburg for the 30th time - a political demonstration and cultural event for the rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex or generally "queer" people (LGBTIQ* for short). This year's motto is "On the barricades for QUEERE human rights" and more than 10,000 participants are expected. The program also includes a bicycle demo, the traditional Night of Small Arts and other events.
"Numerous demonstrations are currently calling for people to stand up for democracy, human rights and diversity - especially in the run-up to the European elections on June 9, 2024. The CSD Northwest in Oldenburg has been highlighting the importance of these issues for 30 years now! The demands have lost none of their urgency. It is currently more important than ever to take a stand and stand up for tolerance and equality," says Lord Mayor Jürgen Krogmann.
"We see what has already been achieved for LGBTIQ* in danger and are therefore taking to the barricades. The political fringes of the left-wing and right-wing extremist movements are currently gaining an alarmingly large amount of support. We are part of the center of society and, together with many other people in Oldenburg, we demand social respect and the acceptance of diversity. Together with a colorful, loud and above all political CSD in Oldenburg, we are setting an example against hatred and exclusion for the 30th time. One of our core demands is the addition of the characteristics of sexual orientation and gender identity to Article 3 Paragraph 3 of the Basic Law for the Federal Republic of Germany," says Andreas Gerbrand, Chairman of CSD Nordwest e.V., the association that organizes CSD Oldenburg.
