"UMRU/unrest" is the latest, boldest and most mature album from acclaimed Detroit-born, Hamburg-based songwriter and Yiddish troubadour Daniel Kahn. These songs - traditional and contemporary, translated and newly composed by Kahn - form his alarming current statement - a call for "Radical Yiddish Autonomy", Kahn's term for a robust, independent Yiddish culture that stands up transnationally against fascism and violence.

Daniel Kahn's new songs are at once tender, lost, irreverent, broken, rebellious and explosive. From klezmer dance fever to apocalyptic jazz, from grotesque cabaret to cozy campfire music - hymns from the no-man's land of times long past, which are only at home in exile, or new songs that make existence in our catastrophic times bearable without denying the militant impetus.
With his new album, Daniel Kahn defines a new, radical "Jewishness" with his own songs, Yiddish traditionals and arrangements of songs by Bonnie 'Prince' Billy, Georg Kreisler (from his album "Non-Aryan Arias"), the legendary Cologne Edelweiss Pirates of the 1930s and Tom Waits.
"Radical Yiddish autonomy" is Daniel Kahn's concept in difficult times.
