At least in theory. We live in a secular constitutional state. Freedom of belief prevails. Believers, people of other faiths and non-believers must get along with each other. All citizens are allowed to have their god, even their gods, but the state itself must be godless. But that is precisely where the problem lies. Although the churches in this country have been losing members rapidly for decades and less than half of the population is now a member of one of the two major Christian churches, the churches insist on centuries-old privileges. And the state grants them these privileges in the form of special rights, subsidies and tax concessions. This complicity must come to an end.
Helmut Ortner describes the ongoing violation of the constitutional requirement of state neutrality - and what needs to be done about it. He also takes a look at ecclesiastical curiosities that clearly show how far removed the church is from the enlightened spirit of the 21st century.

Helmut Ortner has so far published more than twenty books - mainly political non-fiction and biographies. Most recently, Nomen published "Fremde Feinde - Der Justizmord Sacco & Vanzetti" (2015), the essay collections "Gnadenlos Deutsch" (2016) and "Dumme Wut, kluger Zorn" (2018), as well as "EXIT - Warum wir weniger Religion brauchen" (2019). His books have been translated into 14 languages to date. Helmut Ortner lives and works in Frankfurt and Darmstadt. He is a member of Amnesty International and on the advisory board of the Giordano Bruno Foundation.
