"When the right to bodily self-determination falls, the foundations of our democracy crumble," says doctor Alicia Baier. Her book Das Patriarchat im Uterus - Ein Plädoyer für körperliche Selbstbestimmung has just been published. In it, she describes the serious consequences of the fact that abortion is still enshrined in the German Criminal Code. For example, abortion is still not an integral part of gynecological training. Those who want to learn it often practise it in their free time - on papayas.

The book and reading explore the historical, political and ethical dimensions of abortion. They show not only how patriarchal and religiously infused politics still are, but also what bulwarks against self-determination are formed by the refusal of individual doctors and entire clinics, misogynistic myths and conservative gynecology.
Abortions are not a "women's issue", but a key social issue: who has control over the female body?
The current legal regulation in Germany not only causes major problems in medical practice, but is also a gateway for right-wing ideologies.

Dr. med. Alicia Baier is a trainee gynaecologist and performs abortions herself. She has been campaigning for better training and care in this area since her medical studies. In 2015, she founded the first German university group of Medical Students for Choice in Berlin. In 2019, she co-founded Doctors for Choice Germany and has been a member of its board ever since. In her academic work, she dealt with the attitudes of doctors towards abortion and in 2024 advised the German government as an expert in the Bundestag's Legal Affairs Committee on the regulation of abortion law outside the German Criminal Code.
