For many music fans, the name Arnold Schönberg triggers mixed feelings. But before the founder of dodecaphony left tonality behind, Schönberg was firmly rooted in the tradition of late Romanticism. Inspired by Maurice Maeterlinck's symbolist drama, he composed the monumental symphonic poem "Pelleas and Melisande" in 1902/03, in which he shows himself to be the sonic heir to Wagner, Mahler and Strauss. Almost at the same time, Claude Debussy also dealt with the jealousy-laden story of the mysterious Mélisande. The soft colors, light transparency and flowing forms of his "Prélude à 'L'Après-midi d'un faune'" served as a tonal and stylistic model for his opera "Pelléas et Mélisande". A good 110 years before Schönberg's "Pelleas and Melisande", Mozart's Piano Concerto K. 595 was also composed in Vienna. Lahav Shani has already demonstrated his versatile musicality as a conducting soloist on several occasions, now also in Mozart's last piano concerto, which - like many of his late works - is characterized by thoughtfulness and already points to the Romantic era.
