Ecosystem seagrass meadows - Hamburg SALZWASSER e.V. invites you to a film evening with expert discussion
SALZWASSER Deep Dive film evening, December 5, 7 p.m. at the Lichtmess-Kino Hamburg
Admission free!
As a huge CO2 reservoir and important habitat for marine animals, seagrass beds play a crucial role in protecting our planet. Overall, the oceans store around a quarter of annual carbon emissions, with carbon being released 30 to 50 times faster in seagrass meadows than in forests on land. The seagrass meadows in the German Baltic Sea, for example, store around 8.14 million tons of CO2 emissions over an area of 285 square kilometres*.
To draw attention to the previously underestimated importance of seagrass meadows, the Hamburg-based marine conservation organization SALZWASSER e.V. is dedicating its upcoming "Deep Dive Film Evening" to the topic. Two exciting short films, both of which deal with the seagrass meadow ecosystem, will be shown at Hamburg's Lichtmess-Kino on December 5 from 7 pm. In its report entitled "Klimaretter Seegras", NDR accompanies the GEOMAR Helmholtz Center for Ocean Research Kiel in its seagrass research in the fight against climate change and the Patagonia Ocean Film "The Custodians" takes a close look at a seagrass meadow initiative in Scotland.
In the subsequent expert talk, marine biologist Philipp Schubert and SALZWASSER co-founder Lennart Henze will discuss the topic in more detail with the audience. Philipp Schubert works at the GEOMAR Helmholtz Center for Ocean Research Kiel and is co-founder of the submaris research diving group. As a board member of SALZWASSER e.V., Lennart Henze will contribute his knowledge from the perspective of an NGO as well as his experience of working with project sponsors.
Admission to the film evening is free, but visitors can make a donation to support SALZWASSER e.V. in the sustainable protection of coasts and oceans. The SALZWASSER Deep Dive film evening is being held with the kind support of Patagonia and submaris. Further information can be found at www.salzwasser-ev.org.
