But one day, during Carnival, Quasi finally dares to venture down among the people in the square in front of the church and joins in the festivities with enthusiasm. He is even crowned King of Fools—until the crowd discovers that he isn’t wearing a mask at all, but actually looks that way, and they turn on him. The beautiful Esmeralda helps him escape—and he takes her with him to his bell tower… In addition to the timeless fairy tales, it was often the great novels from the world’s literary canon that served as the basis for the Disney Studios’ animated films, such as Lewis Carroll’s *Alice in Wonderland*, Rudyard Kipling’s “The Jungle Book,” or Carlo Collodi’s “Pinocchio.” With Victor Hugo’s classic “The Hunchback of Notre Dame,” this distinguished gallery of literary inspirations was expanded to include yet another famous work of captivating brilliance.
