Last exhibition day

DEMARKATION: Auschwitz, Buchenwald, Verdun - photographic works in the timeless now by Stephan Kaluza

With DEMARKATION, the Bilker Bunker is showing predominantly large-format photographic works by the artist Stephan Kaluza. At first glance, they appear to be one thing: unagitatedly beautiful. But with further information - the reference to the place where the photographs were taken - and the former bunker as the exhibition venue, their ambiguity becomes apparent. What is ultimately illustrated is society's approach to time, memory and forgetting.

The photographs show places of human catastrophe: Auschwitz, Buchenwald, Verdun, among others. At first glance, the landscapes appear peaceful and insignificant. But the titles reveal the most difficult history.

This is precisely where the exhibition comes in: It addresses the relationship between image, meaning and memory. How do we look back today when places no longer bear any visible traces? And what future do we want to shape from this?

We are also showing the WDR documentary "Inside Auschwitz - The former concentration camp in 360°"

On January 27, 1945, the German concentration camp "Auschwitz-Birkenau" was liberated. The award-winning WDR 360° documentary tells the stories of three surviving women: Anita Lasker-Wallfisch, Philomena Franz and Walentyna Nikodem.

The virtual reality documentary uses aerial shots to show the enormous dimensions of the extermination machinery and combines the culture of remembrance with modern technology.

We are very grateful to the Doku & Digital team for allowing us to show this important project on our last two exhibition days as part of our "DEMARKATION" exhibition in the Bilker Bunker.
