Germany is facing major challenges: Climate crisis, pandemic, economic uncertainties, migration and inflation are weighing on the country. These crises also have an impact on the acceptance and stability of our democracy. In the super election year of 2024, populist, right-wing and anti-democratic parties made significant gains - both in European elections and in local and state elections. Distrust of the democratic system is growing and, according to surveys, 38% of the population are already dissatisfied with democracy.
Why is our democracy coming under increasing pressure? Why are anti-democratic positions becoming increasingly popular, especially among young people in Germany? What can we all do to protect and strengthen our democracy?
Political scientist Prof. Dr. Uwe Jun, lawyer Prof. Dr. Daniela Winkler and democracy influencer Rafid Kabir discuss these questions with Gigi Deppe, SWR - and with you.
