„Denkst du noch an Trenčín?“ Europäische Kulturhauptstadt 2026. Ein Abend mit Vortrag, Gesprächen, Lesung & Musik

In 2026, the Slovakian city of Trenčín will be at the center of Europe: as Capital of Culture, it will present its rich history, vibrant present and multi-layered cultural landscape. A special cultural evening approaches this city in a variety of ways.
An important chapter in the city's history is Jewish life, which shaped Trenčín for a long time. The impressive Art Nouveau synagogue still bears witness to this today. Maroš Borský, a committed mediator of Jewish culture in Slovakia, presents the history and present of the synagogue and shows what role it plays in the cultural program of Trenčín 2026.
Eva Umlauf, Holocaust survivor and chairwoman of the International Auschwitz Committee, talks to Maroš Borský about Jewish Trenčín, her autobiography and her latest book "Genau so fängt es an. An appeal" (Hoffmann and Campe). In it, she warns urgently of the dangers of increasing anti-Semitism. The discussion will be moderated by Sabena Donath, Director of the Jewish Academy.
"Are you still thinking about Trenčín?" - the novel by Lukáš Cabala is a declaration of love from the author to his home town. The book was published in German translation by Allee Verlag in March and has been shortlisted for the EU Prize for Literature 2026. In conversation with his translator Stefanie Bose, Lukáš Cabala will provide insights into his work.
The evening will be accompanied by music from the ensemble "Hudba na tanieri" ("Music on a Plate"), which combines Jewish musical traditions with jazz as well as Slovakian and oriental folklore.

The evening is part of the official program of Trenčín - European Capital of Culture 2026 and takes place in cooperation with the Honorary Consulate of the Slovak Republic and the German Cultural Forum Eastern Europe.
