Der Assistent

Der Assistent is the solo project of Berlin-based musician and producer Tom Hessler, also known as the singer and guitarist of the Hamburg band Fotos.

Although the fifth Fotos album "Auf zur Illumination!" (2021) was already more of a solo production by Hessler due to the pandemic, with which Fotos moved further away from their indie rock origins, but as Der Assistent the musician is once again pursuing a completely different approach and sound. Der Assistent finds musical inspiration in the late 1970s and early 1980s and moves between synth-pop, dub, new wave, yacht rock, Latin pop and bossa nova. His first singles were released in 2020 and 2021 on the Staatsakt label. Hessler's lyrics often deal with sadness, loneliness or pain, but the relaxed groove of the music seems to make these feelings easier to bear. The self-titled debut album was released in 2023. The second album "Amnesia on the Amazon" followed just one year later, again via Papercup Records. Pedro Crescenti (The Düsseldorf Düsterboys, International Music) was one of the guests on the album, which was produced by Hessler himself and mixed together with Olaf Opal.

Hessler also runs the Radio Superspace project together with musician and Staatsakt founder Maurice Summen. Since 2025, the two have been organizing a monthly show on ByteFM under the same name.
