Klassik.com described Martin G. Berger's production as a "contemporary psychological thriller". Richard Wagner's powerful music invites us to question the driven characters of his opera analytically. Berger sees the figure of the Dutchman as the "archetype of the repressed". The new production thus reveals, layer by layer, the patriarchal structures that overshadow the relationship between Daland and Senta, father and daughter, and from which the grown-up Senta, now her own savior, tries to fight her way out. The stage design by Alexandre Corazzola shows the surface of an idyllic family home and is transformed into a psychological space with videos by Vincent Stefan.
Under the direction of General Music Director Leo McFall, a top-class gala cast will be guests in Wiesbaden for the International May Festival: Vida Miknevičiūtė is not only captivating as Senta on the major international stages. With Johan Reuter as the Dutchman and Stephen Milling as Daland, two leading Wagner interpreters are coming to the Hessisches Staatstheater for the first time.
