Michael Ende was born in Garmisch-Partenkirchen and grew up in Munich. After training as an actor at the Otto Falckenberg School, he worked as an actor and cabaret writer. However, he became famous above all for his imaginative children’s and young adult books. His breakthrough came in 1960 with *Jim Knopf and Lukas the Engine Driver*. Other well-known works include *Momo* (1973) and *The Neverending Story* (1979), both of which were international successes. Ende received numerous awards, including the German Youth Literature Prize. He died in Filderstadt in 1995.
