Estonia in the 1890s. The country is occupied by the Russian Empire. The poet Juhan Liiv is placed in a mental hospital in Tartu. When he manages to escape from there, he returns to his parents in the village of Alatskivi to recover. Here Liiv learns of the murder of a farmer who had apparently found a large fortune that has now disappeared. Liiv decides to investigate on his own. He not only fights for justice, but also with his inner demons. The film tells a fictional story about the Estonian national poet and shows him as a detective - surrounded by circus performers, doctors, publishers, a real devil and a missing inheritance ...
