From January 1707, the 22-year-old Handel made a name for himself in Rome's cultural scene with his brilliant improvisations on the organ and made some well-heeled friends. One of them was Cardinal Benedetto Pamphilj. He not only provided the composer with the opportunity and financial means, but also the text for a musical debate between beauty, pleasure, knowledge and time. Beauty must make a decision: Should she devote herself entirely to pleasure or listen to the admonitions of time and knowledge and allow thoughts of her own finitude?
