A street performer who is repeatedly humiliated in Gotham City kills three rich snobs in a clown costume who beat him up on the subway. When his mask then becomes the icon of a revolt by the socially marginalized, he undergoes a frightening transformation. This psychological thriller, with its atmospheric visual design and soundtrack, interprets the DC character of the Joker, one of the most famous super villains of the genre as Batman's counterpart, as a broken anti-hero whose development is made tangible with the greatest intensity without any fantastical elements.
