Between antiquity and the present - a musical search for traces
Antiquity continues to inspire us today. Not just as a distant past, but as a living source of
source of cultural and artistic impulses. Modernity, on the other hand, is not
Modernity, on the other hand, does not contradict this, but continues a centuries-old tradition - with new expression, new language, but in constant dialog with what lies behind us.
In 1949, Luigi Dallapiccola (1904-1975) once again devoted himself to the ancient myth of Marcia with Tre Episodi dal balletto Marsia
to the ancient myth of Marsyas, six years after the completion of his ballet Marsia. The mythological material - the musical contest between Marsyas and Apollo, which ends with the satyr's cruel death - serves Dallapiccola not only as a narrative framework, but also as an existential space for reflection on hubris, art and punishment. The three episodes condense central scenes of the ballet into expressive musical snapshots.
The collection Attitudes by Vanni Moretto is a series of six short studies, each of which
each of which expresses a single mood. These are
"characteristic pieces" in which the performer is asked to make a simple and fundamental
gesture - Attitude - is required. There are allusions to the overture and the form of the
Baroque suite form are present as well as a tribute to the composer Conlon
Nancarrow.
Filigrane Scarlatte (2015) by Caterina Di Cecca (*1984) is a homage to Domenico
Scarlatti on the occasion of his 330th birthday. The starting point is his Sonata in E major K.136, whose
structure and tonality serves as a formal and tonal matrix for a new compositional perspective.
perspective.
The program is rounded off with the eight Invenzioni (1944) by Goffredo Petrassi (1904-2003), his most important piano work. The pieces show great stylistic diversity and yet a clear signature: structural transparency, formal precision and references to the Italian instrumental tradition - especially in Invenzione No. 6, which refers to the Roman polyphony of the 16th and 17th centuries.
