Between child prodigy and madman: folk innovator Devendra Banhart

Devendra Banhart was born in Houston, Texas and moved with his mother to her native Caracas, Venezuela when his parents separated. During his teenage years, the family moved to Los Angeles, where he learned English and discovered his love of skateboarding and making music. He made his first live appearances during his time at the San Francisco Art Institute. Since then, Banhart has lived in New York City, Paris, San Francisco and again in Los Angeles, where he still resides today.

Banhart first came to international attention with the release of his debut album "Oh Me Oh My...The Way the Day Goes By the Sun Is Setting Dogs Are Dreaming Lovesongs of the Christmas Spirit" (2002) - a collection of songs he recorded for himself. Other albums included "Rejoicing in the Hands" (2004), "Niño Rojo" (2004), "Cripple Crow" (2005), "Smokey Rolls Down Thunder Canyon" (2007) and "What Will We Be" (2009). "Mala", his 2013 debut album on Nonesuch Records, was described by Q as "the best of his career", while the Wall Street Journal called it "his most concise, careful and winning work to date".

Banhart has collaborated with the likes of Anohni (formerly Antony) and the Johnsons, Beck, Vashti Bunyan, Os Mutantes and Vetiver. He has also performed with Gilberto Gil and Caetano Veloso and was part of a concert curated by David Byrne at New York's Carnegie Hall. Devendra Banhart is also a successful visual artist. His distinctive, meticulously colored and often mysterious drawings have been exhibited in galleries around the world, including the Art Basel Contemporary Art Fair in Miami, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Palais des Beaux-Arts in Brussels and the Los Angeles Museum of Contemporary Art.
