Vietnamese-American artist Diane Severin Nguyen presents a completely new series of works for the first time at Haus der Kunst, centering on a new film complemented by photographs, sculptures and a participatory kinetic installation. The exhibition delves into Nguyen's exploration of the politics of victimhood and what she describes as the "predicament of the sentimental gaze": a paradoxical situation in which brutalized individuals are encouraged to show their vulnerability and this openness is simultaneously punished. The artist examines how perceptions of war and violence inscribe themselves into our contemporary self-image and help to shape identity.
