With "The Magic Flute" by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, one of the most frequently performed works in opera history returns to the HfMT this summer! Once again, Tamino and Pamina embark on a journey between light and darkness, between the powers of the Queen of the Night and Sarastro's kingdom. In this unhinged world, the adolescents must find their own way.
This opera owes its enduring fascination not least to its dense interweaving of fairy-tale and humorous elements, Masonic symbolism, ancient Egyptian mysticism and ideas of the Enlightenment. This complexity is also reflected in the music, where folk melodies meet the refined formal language of Viennese classical music. Since its premiere, the opera's multifaceted design has invited ever new interrogations and interpretations.
In this summer opera, director Christian Poewe pursues the approach of breaking up the traditional interpretative weight of the work by returning to the playful nature of the theater. His concept sees the stage as an abstract place of transformation, where identities and roles are put on and taken off like costumes. A central element of his production concept is the integration of the respective native languages of the international ensemble. This multilingualism gives the young actors direct access to their characters. In this way, the search for identity, one of the main themes of the play, is directly linked to the individual perspectives of the singers.
The summer opera will be the final production for the final year of the Master of Opera course; a final test before they take the step into the world of opera. Students from the Bachelor's and Master's degree courses in singing and international Erasmus participants also join the ensemble. Under the musical direction of Willem Wentzel, together with the Hamburg Symphony Orchestra and up-and-coming creatives from universities that cooperate closely with the HfMT (HAW and HFBK), a lively synthesis of the arts is created.
