Die HAG-Straße: Ein Vorbild für Bauhaus

There is hardly any other place in Bremen where the origins of industrial architecture can be traced as impressively as along the Holz- und Fabrikenufer in Überseestadt. Listed buildings and long-established companies bring industrial history to life here. To this day, this waterfront remains Northern Europe’s largest hub for green coffee.

At the time of its development, beginning in 1906, HAG Street was regarded worldwide as a model for a new form of industrial production. Even Bauhaus founder Walter Gropius made a sketch on site and praised the factory building of the “Kaffee-Handels-Aktien-Gesellschaft” as groundbreaking and exemplary.

Our walk along the harbor waterfront takes us past numerous industrial buildings that, as historical witnesses, document the profound societal shift from Historicism to the Bauhaus. A special highlight is a visit to the magnificently restored Marble Hall—the only listed interior on HAG-Straße.
