During her three trips "into the depths", she meets Mauler and believes she can convert him to humanity. At first, he wants to reopen the factories and provide the workers with wages and bread again. But Johanna was deceived. The cold, the poverty, the hunger of the workers - Mauler accepts them when he sees the chance to blackmail the other meat factory owners.
