Probably Studio Ghibli’s most beautiful anime—and at the same time, the saddest film ever made. A Japanese family during World War II: The father goes off to war, the mother falls ill, and the two children—a 14-year-old boy and his four-year-old sister—are left to fend for themselves. Their desperate struggle for survival amid food shortages in times of crisis illustrates the tragedy of war like no other anti-war film.
