The mask has fallen - Investigative journalism on the AfD and European right-wing nationalism
Marcus Bensmann is a senior reporter at CORRECTIV and played a key role in the investigation Secret Plan against Germany published on January 10, 2024. The report was about the meeting of AfD politicians and members of the conservative CDU-Werteunion with far-right populists and entrepreneurs on November 25, 2023 in a hotel near Potsdam. The publication mobilized over a million people ad hoc, who demonstrated in more than 300 cities against the AfD deportation plans that had been discussed at the meeting in Potsdam.
Since then, the wave of protests against the AfD's increasingly unrestrained right-wing extremism in Germany has continued unabated. In Düsseldorf, more than 100,000 democrats joined the protest march on January 27. By the end of February, more than 3 million people had taken to the streets in over 1,000 demonstrations for an open, pluralistic society.
Immediately after the publication of CORRECTIV's research , AfD member of the Bundestag Alice Weidel gave notice to her personal speaker Roland Hartwig, who had given a lecture at the meeting. The "Backwerk", "Hans im Glück" and "Pottsalat" chainsdistanced themselves from their financier, whose name appeared alongside that of the far-right Düsseldorf dentist Gernot Mörig on the invitation to the meeting. Other participants in the Potsdam meeting were also named. These included the entrepreneur and publisher Hans-Ulrich Kopp and a major pharmaceutical entrepreneur from Saxony-Anhalt. Other media contributed reports on further meetings between right-wing extremists, the Identitarian movement and AfD MPs. The report acted as a wake-up call: newsagents are now withdrawing the far-right AfD magazine "Compact" from sale. The far-right weekly newspaper "Junge Freiheit" followed suit. An AfD ban has been widely discussed ever since.
In September 2023, Marcus Bensmann reported on the lively links between the AfD and Putin's Russia under the title: Alternative for Russia. The AfD's "peace plan" openly longs for a "Greater Eurasia" proclaimed by Putin. Under Russian leadership, of course. Serbia and Hungary should be taken as examples.
Alexander Gauland holds talks at the Russian embassy, AfD politicians visit Crimea, Russian-occupied separatist areas, cavort in Moscow and appear on the propaganda TV of warring Russia. The AfD wants to leave the European Union and lead Germany into the "Shanghai Cooperation Organization", a club of dictatorships dominated by Russia and China. The AfD sees Russia as a natural ally against the "rainbow empire", i.e. the policy of equal rights and sexual self-determination. Höcke's party openly sides with Putin and Kyrill in their fight against the diversity of sexual self-determination of individuals, against family planning and abortion. It rallies behind the conservative, simple-minded worldviews of Russian oligarchs and regurgitates the Russian narrative of the "third Rome of Greater Eurasia". 66 of the 80 AfD MPs in the Bundestag voted against arms deliveries to Ukraine in 2022.
