Summer at the country house: Konstantin and his lover Nina have prepared a play that is set to revolutionize the theater. He is the author and director, she is the radiant protagonist who dreams of becoming an actress - but in the audience are his mother, the famous actress Arkadina and her lover, the successful author Trigorin. Before the play ends, Arkadina publicly ridicules Konstantin's meagre talent. An argument breaks out, Nina feels attracted to Trigorin, Konstantin falls into a deep personal and artistic crisis, while Arkadina's jealousy grows. A play about two fundamentally different generations of artists and about a group of people who seek happiness in art and love.
