In 2007, journalist and author Irmtraud Gutschke spent nine months in intensive discussions with Hermann Kant for the book "Die Sache und die Sachen". The two remained in close contact until his death on August 16, 2016. They discussed his writing, the experiences of his life and, above all, his relationship with the defunct GDR state. Kant became world-famous with novels such as "Die Aula" and "Das Impressum". And yet the word "controversial" is still attached to him today.
On the 100th anniversary of Hermann Kant's birth, Irmtraud Gutschke talks to Wolfgang Hübner about one of the GDR's most successful authors.
