Gaps and Voids
Pioneering Women Artists of Modernism

In a newly established room in the K20, current questions are brought to bear on key works of classical modernism, and at the same time individual paintings owned by the Landesmuseum are presented in more detail and historically classified. The first part dealt with the founding history of the Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen. The second chapter was devoted to the question of how the museum deals with colonial thought patterns in its own collection. Chapter III exposes gaps and voids within the collection and focuses on pioneering female modern artists.

The third chapter, "The Collection. Questioning and Thinking Forward" pays tribute to women artists from three generations. The presentation illustrates the museum's acquisition goals and research, while demonstrating the groundbreaking contributions women artists have made to the development of modern art. Works of art by Marianne von Werefkin, Sonia Delaunay-Terk, and Louise Bourgeois will be presented. These women artists are not yet represented in the collection due to the museum's history and collection structure. Now, with this presentation, the art collection offers them the place they have long deserved.
