Tobias Moretti, Meret Becker, Claudia Michelsen, Ronald Zehrfeld, Matthias Koeberlin and Thomas Loibl stage a highly topical play about prenatal diagnostics

A German couple travels to England to conceive a child in a private clinic using in-vitro fertilization. Three embryos are created, but only one will be implanted. At this moment, a speculative preview of the most important events between birth and death begins. The three possible lives of the embryos - Amelie, Max and Fabian - are told in a parallel montage: What makes life happy? Is DNA really the blueprint that determines everything? Which of the three lives is the most worth living? There are three possibilities, and the parents will choose one. What remains: the impossible.

The well-known actors Tobias Moretti, Matthias Koeberlin, Meret Becker, Claudia Michelsen, Ronald Zehrfeld and Thomas Loibl brought the text by Plamper/ Kamphausen, conceived as a radio play, to the stage in Hanover in 2018. The idea and adaptation by the producer of the staged reading, Simone Henke, was intended as a one-off reading. The unexpected, overwhelming success has since led to the ensemble giving guest performances throughout the German-speaking world.

Claudia Michelsen and Thomas Loibl played the married couple who are unable to have children and therefore embark on a journey to implant the genetically "most valuable" material with the mother's medical help.

The three embryos that are created in the test tube are played by Matthias Koeberlin, Meret Becker and Ronald Zehrfeld. The actors impressively bring these characters to life and allow them to grow up fictitiously. Meret Becker's vivacity unfolds an energy that is quickly transferred to the audience, Matthias Koeberlin shows his character's ambition to plan his life in a magnificently unwavering way, his assertiveness flickers almost palpably through the room; Ronald Zehrfeld plays the oppressive introversion of a boy who can only express his feelings when playing the piano; the sound of his sensitive voice is a delight for the audience - these are all masterly performances.

Claudia Michelsen and Thomas Loibl impressively show how each individual child affects the parents' life together; they transform themselves into a multi-faceted couple who can bear different burdens and either focus on what they have in common or break apart as a result. You take the role of the couple away from them every minute.

Tobias Moretti plays the master of ceremonies brilliantly. The way he brings all the threads together, acting mainly as the narrator and reading some of the supporting roles with a great deal of humor, is a brilliant achievement. He guides the audience through the evening's story with a level-headed voice and expression.

The exuberant enthusiasm of the artists, the enthusiastic audience, the roles perfectly and thoughtfully cast by Simone Henke, the range of emotions evoked on this evening - it works!
