Saori is a young widow. She has a close relationship with her son Minato. When the boy begins to withdraw, she realizes that something cannot be right. She senses that she is not being told the whole truth, but wants to get to the bottom of the matter. Until it gradually becomes clear what really happened. It changes the lives of everyone involved forever...

Japanese director Hirokazu Koreeda (SHOPLIFTERS) has made a name for himself with his precise eye and pronounced humanism. His new film tells a moving story about people fighting for their happiness and about a friendship between two boys that should not be. From three different perspectives, the truth is revealed only gradually and finally with emotional force. The recently deceased Ryuichi Sakamoto is responsible for the music.
