On the occasion of the 50th anniversary, we cordially invite you to the film screening of"The Lost Honor of Katharina Blum" on October 27 at 11:00 a.m. in the cinema at Raschplatz (Hanover).

Before the movie there will be a thematic introduction by Maria Birger, speaker Heinrich Böll - Life and Work (Cologne).

Afterwards, we will welcome René Böll for a discussion, who will provide information about the circumstances and atmosphere surrounding the publication of the story and the film's release in the 1970s.

About the movie

Carnival in Cologne. Exuberance. Katharina Blum (Angela Winkler) meets the handsome Ludwig Götten (Jürgen Prochnow) at a merry carnival party at her godmother Else Woltersheim's (Regine Lutz), falls in love and spends the night with him - the first man she has been attracted to for a long time. There were men before, a staid husband from whom she separated, rich notables she had met through the Blornas, a pushy former employer from whom she subsequently resigned.

Katharina now works as a domestic servant for the wealthy lawyer Dr. Blorna (Heinz Bennent) and his wife Trude (Hannelore Hoger), an architect who is said to have had a "red attitude" a long time ago.

We watch from the police camera lens as the couple go to Katharina's apartment in a high-rise building, kiss and get into the elevator. The next morning, a police squad led by Inspector Beizmenne (Mario Adorf) storms Katharina's apartment. This is the prelude to the double dismantling that Katharina experiences in the days that follow - firstly by the police and secondly, and far more devastatingly, by the press. Although she is overwhelmed by the media spectacle and the attacks on her person, she does not give in. But what is the final outcome of this hunt?

Volker Schlöndorff and Margarethe von Trotta make a statement against a slanderous press apparatus with their haunting production based on the book of the same name by Heinrich Böll.
