At the beginning, we see the couple Eduard and Charlotte, both in their second marriage. When Eduard decides to invite his friend Otto, the captain, and Charlotte invites her foster daughter Ottilie to join them, the inevitable happens: Eduard falls in love with Ottilie and the captain is attracted to Charlotte. In a last desperate act of love between Charlotte and Eduard, a child is conceived. They search for a solution and end up in a fatal catastrophe. Elective Affinities reads like a laboratory of the Enlightenment, in which the ability of people to relate to each other and to nature is examined and the relationship between the present, past and future is renegotiated. The balance of power between freedom and necessity is up for discussion and the question of whether love consists of free will is raised.
