"Behind every strong man is a strong woman!" screams Mumine when her husband is arrested. She has four children, is in her mid-30s and the wife of a Crimean Tatar political prisoner, just like Maye, the second protagonist of "Return". The political repression of the Muslim Crimean Tatars is nothing new. Under Stalin they were expelled, under Gorbachev they were allowed to return, under Putin they have been persecuted again since the occupation of Crimea in 2014. "Return" paints a picture of these strong women. Their traditional female role does not stand in the way of their commitment. They possess strength, beauty and dignity. Only in their most intimate moments are they overwhelmed by desperate powerlessness.

Background:

The Crimean Tatars are a Turkic-speaking ethnic group that originally lived in Crimea. Under Stalin, they were deported in 1944 under inhumane circumstances. So many people died in the process that their deportation is now considered genocide. Under Gorbachev, they were allowed to resettle in their original homeland, Crimea. This process was accompanied by numerous conflicts with the people who had settled there in the meantime. In 2014, Crimea was occupied by Russia. The majority of Crimean Tatars resisted the annexation. This resulted in a new wave of political persecution of Crimean Tatars.
