Join in - experiment - be amazed: this is the motto for the first weekend in July at Open Space Domshof. On Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., the Bremen and Bremerhaven worlds of knowledge will be guests there - with an exciting offer for children aged 5 to 11 and all those who have retained their curiosity.
The Wissenswelten include renowned institutions in the state of Bremen. At long tables in front of the Open Space stage, they set up many stations for experimentation, construction and handicrafts and invite children to join in. From building rockets with the Universum® Bremen to microscoping polar bear hair with the Zoo am Meer to "packing suitcases" with the German Emigration Center, there are many stations that allow children to experience new things in an imaginative, exciting way and provide aha effects. And of course they are fun too! Registration is not necessary, participation is free of charge.
The offers of the individual worlds of knowledge:
"Aim high" is the motto in the rocket workshop at Universum® Bremen. With the help of paper, scissors and glue, visitors can build their own rockets. What can reduce air friction? How can flight stability be increased? Each design can be tested and improved on a launch pad. And of course you can take your rocket home with you!
Malachite and passion butterflies, king moths and co. - what exactly do the different butterfly species look like? And do these interesting insects really have scales? A look through the binoculars reveals it! Butterfly species, which can also be admired in the botanika's tropical house, are examined closely on the Domshof. You can also immerse yourself in the fascinating world of trees and shrubs at the botanika. Oak, Norway maple or hazelnut - what is actually growing in my garden? Here the children become plant professionals.
If you are curious about the world and sometimes wonder what life is like in other countries, the stamp campaign at the Übersee-Museum is the right place for you. Here you can find out what the mysterious Adinkra symbols from Ghana are all about, get to know the magnificent national bird of Papua New Guinea and trace the footprints of lions and zebras. Using stamps from Ghana, Papua New Guinea and Africa, the children then design their own adventure postcard, which can be sent by post on their travels.
At the Zoo am Meer, children can find answers to exciting questions about polar bears - for example, how the animals are adapted to the extreme cold. Real polar bear hair is examined under a microscope. Why the polar bear is actually black and what the albedo effect is all about is also explored. Children also learn how the Zoo am Meer contributes to the protection of polar bears - for example by breeding polar bears in the zoo and protecting species in the wild.
What is sea level rise all about and how do the inhabitants of a Hallig protect themselves from storm surges? At the Klimahaus research station, children get to the bottom of this question in a playful way and learn a lot about the construction of terps, among other things.
