Discussion panel on conspiracy theories and fact checks

Whether it's corona, migration, climate change or the war in Ukraine - more and more people are distrusting the portrayals of the established media. Instead, they are informing themselves via various alternative news portals that have emerged on the internet. These often focus on the secret plans of influential groups of people behind the scenes of official political narratives. Sometimes real connections are discussed, but sometimes quite adventurous distortions, exaggerations and untruths are spread. What should we make of such "conspiracy theories"? And why have they become increasingly popular in recent years?

In response to the spread of "alternative media", mainstream journalism is increasingly relying on so-called "fact checks". These claim to check the truthfulness of rumors circulating on the internet and to correct false reports. In doing so, they are tapping into the widespread need for orientation in an increasingly confusing (digital) world. But can they satisfy this need in a meaningful way?

We would like to discuss this together after a brief input.

The basic idea of the Union Salon is to create a lively meeting place with a living room character from the neighborhood for the neighborhood in the district, in which the focus is on social interaction. We want to be there for each other in the neighborhood, look out for each other and make our district livelier and safer. The neighborhood space has a strong feminist focus with a women's space "Lyra" and an open girls' meeting place. Together, we want to create low-threshold offers and projects, whether of a political, cultural or sporting nature - little by little, we want to open up all areas of collective life.
